With cold weather comes out the woollies, hoodies, gloves and snuggies… oh, and the dreaded spider. Yes, it is that time of year again, spider season is back, and it seems like every year a new expert is warning of a new, larger, more deadly species of spider looking to invade the homes of unsuspecting Irish families.

So what exactly should we be fearing this year? The false widow. This spider bears a striking resemblance with the deadly black widow, however only some species of which are moderately poisonous to humans. In spite of most false widows being virtually harmless, one pest control company has revealed it is dealing with 10 to 15 callouts a week from terrified homeowners nationwide.

So how do we avoid these harmless creeps entering our home? Here are a few of pristine homes best tips for keeping spiders out.

  1. White Vinegar- Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and water, and spray all the cracks and crevices around your home.
  2. Citrus- Spiders hate all things citrus! By rubbing citrus peels on areas where spiders are known to frequent is a great way to keep them from coming around. Even using lemon scented furniture polish can drive spiders away!
  3. Cats- Cats are a great spider deterrent. Cats being natural hunters can’t help but pounce when they see something small crawling.
  4. Chestnuts- chestnuts have been said to help deter spiders by placing them around your home. However, we here at pristine home have tried it and we were not convinced to say the least.
  5. Mint- Spiders hate mint. Simply fill a spray bottle with water and a few drops of peppermint oil and spray away.
